The Transition from David to Solomon to Rehoboam

The Royal Change Over

David was now 70 years of age and worn and feeble from his stressful earlier life. Unlike the kings and rulers of other nations, he did not wait till he died, but he established Solomon as king as commanded by God while he was still in his right mind and could see to a smooth transfer of power. Solomon For Solomon to have a smooth transfer of power, it was David's and the Lord's intention to remove anything that could cause dissension and factions as it was done in heaven when Satan sinned.
And so David said,
"My time to die has come. Be confident and determined, and do what the Lord your God orders you to do. Obey all his laws and commands, as written in the Law of Moses, so that wherever you go you may prosper in everything you do." 1.Kings 2:2-4, GNB.
And again we read,
"Solomon, the son of King David, took firm control of the kingdom of Israel, and the Lord his God blessed him and made him very powerful." 1. Chronicles. 1:1, GNB.
In the reign of David and Solomon, Israel became strong among the nations and had many opportunities to wield a mighty influence in behalf of truth and the right. The name of Jehovah was exalted and held in honor, and the purpose for which the Israelites had been established in the Land of Promise bade fair of meeting with fulfillment. Barriers were broken down, and seekers after truth from the lands of the heathen were not turned away unsatisfied. Conversions took place, and the church of God on earth was enlarged and prospered. {PK 25.1}

How could it take place that even gentiles were attracted to the way things were now in Israel?

Co-ordinating Egypt’s Old and Middle Kingdoms with the Bible

A revisionist correspondent has asked Damien Mackey:

....
I was wondering if I might be able to have your thoughts on where you place the dynasties of the Old and Middle Kingdoms.

I have tended to lean towards Donovan Courville's dates on these periods but have been having my doubts about this recently. As you probably know, having seen some of your comments on a couple of your pages, Courville has dynasties 5 and 6 parallel with the Middle Kingdom.

[Another revisionist] has stated archaeologists would have picked up on this contemporary situation if it were true as there would be objects from these dynasties in the same layer but they haven't picked up on this. They clearly differentiate between early bronze and middle bronze.

I know dynasties 5 and 6 were minor dynasties and some objects have been found outside of Egypt. I have asked him if there is any clear evidence of them being in a level below those confidently linked to the Middle Kingdom? There may not simply be enough evidence in the finds to rule out Courville's contemporary theory. His main evidence for it is Ai where only early bronze objects have been found. [Another revisionist] says there is a big question mark over the main site identified as Ai and the true Ai is likely yet to be found.

Velikovsky has only made brief comments about the Old Kingdom's end in "In the Beginning" and he has a more standard view though he dates the end of the Old Kingdom later than convention does. He has it dated to about 1850 BC in sync with the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and in line with the early bronze destructions that Schaeffer recorded which are not the same but separate to the middle bronze destructions.

If those destructions are separate then where in Egypt's history do you think these destructions occur? Are you familiar with any accounts by the writers of the Old Kingdom to such destruction? Have you seen any likely place in the early Mesopotamian dynasties that speak of such early bronze destructions?

If we had to propose an alternative to Courville if stratigraphy ruled out his contemporary theory where would you place each dynasty roughly?

I like Courville's idea about the Sothis list just showing the primary rulers and leaving out those parallel at the same time. The order is 1, 4 then 5 for the Old Kingdom 12 and late 13.

Adjusting those dates would be tricky if we accepted a 1850 BC Old Kingdom destruction. Dynasties 1, 4 and 5 would have to fit between 2100 & 1850. Currently he has them finishing about 1600 BC. Dynasties 12 he has starting about 1700 BC. Would one try and move back Dynasty 12 or have some foreign dynasty (dynasties 7-10 which Courville said we one and the same as the later Hyksos dynasties) fill in the void?

I'd appreciate your thoughts on the matter when you are able to give me a reply.

....

Damien's reply:

....
I'll put together some thoughts for you over the next few days.
Dr John Osgood has absolutely nailed Abram (Abraham) to the Chalcolithic phase at Engeddi with respect to the invasion of Palestine at that time by the four Mesopotamian kings.
This Mesopotamian coalition attacked the kings of Pentapolis (Sodom, etc.), which will enable one to assess archaeologically the later event of the fire and brimstone. Look out Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras!
Any attempt to date Abraham to the MBI nomadic phase is doomed to failure in my opinion. As I have so often said, the starting point for any biblically co-ordinated archaeology is the identification of the MBI nomads as the Exodus Israelites, arriving in Palestine well after Abraham.

My regards
Damien.

Reading common sense into the Geography of the Book of Tobit

To the good friend who wrote this about the geography of the Book of Tobit:

Tobias and the Tigris.

Several possibilities exist here. It is not unknown for several streams to bear the same name, nor is it impossible that the swiftest road into Media was a highway which was accessed by Tobias traveling to the real Tigris River to connect with this route.

….

The AMAIC replies:

What we have argued with early Genesis, especially the Six Days and the Flood, is that a ‘surface’ reading of a biblical text may sometimes lead one to a conclusion that is far from what the original scribe(s) intended, and often far also from common sense. Such we believe to be the case, too, with standard versions of the Book of Tobit with regard to its geography. If we would believe the text as it currently stands, the angel Raphael was leading young Tobias (our Job) a merry dance inasmuch as, with a starting point at Assyrian Nineveh, and with the aim of arriving at Rages near Ecbatana in Media - Ecbatana being some 185 miles east of Nineveh - the angel brings Tobias in the evening to the river Tigris, directly west of Nineveh.

No wonder then that, on this basis, The Jerusalem Bible says that “the geography is inexact”, and that Fr. D. Dumm (“Tobit”) in The Jerome Biblical Commentary, exclaims that:

“[The angel] Raphael knows the journey of life far better than the route to Media!”

Unfortunately, though, Fr. Dumm just leaves it at that, without being willing, or able, to defend the accuracy of the Bible with a proper explanation of what is happening here.

But we need to go to other versions of the Book of Tobit to find the solution.

There is no geographical support in the Book of Tobit for an eastwards journey, from Nineveh to the classical Media (Ecbatana and Rhages):

For one, the River Tigris is west of Nineveh;

And, whilst the Median Rhages is in the plain, with Ecbatana being in the mountains, the Book of Tobit has Ecbatana in the plain and Rages in the mountains (see below);

And again, Charan (Haran), in Syria, is, according to the Douay version of Tobit, ‘midway’ between Nineveh and ‘Media’;

And furthermore, whereas the journey from Tobit's Ecbatana to Ragesnormally took “two full days”, the almost 200-mile journey from the Median Ecbatana to Rhages would have taken significantly longer. In fact it took the army of Alexander the Great 11 days at full gallop to march from the one to the other 13]. Rightly then does Jan Simons observe (according to a Median context) that the journey referred to in the Book of Tobit "would be a forced 'journey of two days' even for an express messenger"14].

Thankfully there are versions of the Book of Tobit that set us aright, however, with Ecbatana becoming “Bathania” (the Roman province of Batanaea), that is, the fertile Bashan, east of the River Jordan in Palestine, and Media becoming “Midian”.

Thus the angel Raphael knows exactly what he is doing.

Why, did he not inform the anxious Tobit that he knew the way thoroughly (as an angel would know)?

So we find that the real angel Raphael was escorting the young Tobias, not eastwards, but westwards from Nineveh, to the Tigris crossing, then to Haran, and on to Bashan (where the angel then leaves on an early flight for Damascus).

I [Damien Mackey] discussed all this in Volume Two [of my thesis], Chapter 2, pp. 38-40, where I had specifically claimed that“Rages”, a city in the mountains, must be the city of Damascus that dominated the province of Batanaea” (p. 39). Damascus, almost 700 m above sea level, is actually situated on a plateau. Secondly, I gave there very specific geographical details in order to identify this “Rages” in relation to“Ecbatana” (Tobit 5:6), which I had in turn identified (following the Heb. Londinii, or HL, fragment version of Tobit) with “Bathania”, or Bashan (possibly Herodotus’ Syrian Ecbatana as opposed to the better known Median Ecbatana). According to Tobit, “Rages is situated in the mountains, two days’walk from Ecbatana which is in the plain”. Now Damascus is precisely two days’walk from Bashan in the Hauran plain, as according to Jâkût el-Hamawi who says of Batanaea’s most central town of Nawâ …: “Between Nawa and Damascus is two days’ journey” (as quoted on p. 39). What further consolidates the fact that Tobit’s ‘Ecbatana’ was in a westerly direction, rather than an easterly one, is that his son Tobias, leaving Nineveh, arrived at the Tigris river in the evening; an impossibility were he heading for Median Ecbatana in the east. And, according to the Vulgate version of Tobit, Charan, that is, Haran, is situated“in the halfway” between Nineveh and Ecbatana. The traveller is clearly journeying towards the west. Whilst Bible scholars today tend to dismiss the whole geography of the Book of Tobit as nonsensical, a simple adjustment based on a genuine version (Heb. Londinii), makes perfect - even very precise (“two days walk”) - sense of it.

The testimony of Jâkût el-Hamawi here was an absolute clincher for me, not only when trying to make sense of the geography of the Book of Tobit, but also for having Tobias, with the angel, heading to the very region in Naphtali from where Tobit himself had hailed (Naphtalian Bashan), but also - from the point of view of having the geography of Tobit converge with that of Job (my Tobias) - with the pair of travellers heading to the very geographical region, Bashan, where ancient legends of Job place his home of Uz and his final resting place.

Syro-Arabic Traditions

Again, this Damascene region is the very one in which the Syro-Arabic traditions place the home of Job.

The Jâkût el-Hamawi and Moslem tradition generally mention the east Hauran fertile tract of country north-west of Têmâ and Bûzân, el-Bethenîje (i.e. Batanaea), as the district in which Job dwelt. According to Abufelda 25]: "The whole of Bethenije, a part of the province of Damascus, belonged to Job as his possession".

The Syrian tradition also locates Job's abode in Batanaea, where lies an ancient "Monastery of Job" (Dair Êjûb), built in honour of the holy man.

All the larger works on Palestine and Syria agree that "Uz" is not to be sought in Edom proper. In these works we also find it recorded that Batanaea is there called Job's fatherland. In Batanaea itself the traveller hears this constantly. If any one speaks of the fruitfulness of the whole district; or of the fields around a village, he is always answered: 'Is it not the land of Job (bilâd Êjûb)?'; 'Does it not belong to the villages of Job (diâ Êjûb)?'.

It seems that Batanaea (Hauran) and the land of Job are synonymous.

Job's Tomb and other Relics

Regarding Job's tomb, we read from Ibn er-Râbi that 26]:"To the prophets buried in the region of Damascus belongs also Job, and his tomb is near Nawa, in the district of Hauran".

Delitzsch 27] notes, in favour of Batanaea, that the "heap of ashes" (Job 2:8) upon which Job sat in his misery is variously translated as "dunghill", and that only in a Batanaean context is there no contradiction, since the two were "synonymous notions". There the dung, being useless for agricultural purposes, is burnt from time to time in an appointed place before the town; while in any other part of Syria it is as valuable as among any farmer. This distinctive fact, he concludes, is yet another indication that Job's "land of Uz" cannot refer to the land of Edom.

Textbook History Out of Kilter With Era of King Solomon By 500 Years

Dr. John Bimson’s important article, “Hatshepsut and the Queen of Sheba: A Critique of Velikovsky’s Identification and an Alternative View” (C and C Review, Vol. VIII, 1986), exposed as untenable, in the eyes of many revisionists, Velikovsky’s identification of Hatshepsut with the biblical Queen of Sheba. This was due to a series of strong arguments against Velikovsky’s reconstruction – some of these being irrefutable. Amongst the most telling of Bimson’s points were those that pertained to the famous Punt expedition, that Velikovsky had attempted to identify with the biblical visit by the Queen of the South to King Solomon in Jerusalem. Not only was Hatshepsut no longer a queen by the time of the Punt expedition – {she was actually in her Year 9 as pharaoh (king)} – but it appears from the Deir el-Bahri inscriptions that she did not actually accompany the Egyptian expedition to the land of Punt. The biblical queen, on the other hand, had most definitely visited King Solomon at Jerusalem in person.

What Bimson still shared with Velikovsky (at least in 1986), however, was the conviction that Hatshepsut was contemporaneous with the (approximate) era of King Solomon. Revisionists do not necessarily take that view anymore. And therein lies a problem. Because Hatshepsut, as queen, is still the outstanding candidate for the biblical “Queen of Sheba (of the South)”, given the testimony of Josephus that the biblical queen had ruled Egypt and Ethiopia, and given the likeness of her throne name, Maat-ka-re (Makera) to the queen’s legendary name, Makeda.

Bimson scrapped Hatshepsut as a candidate, but failed to provide any other contemporaneous woman ruler to represent this famous queen to whom both the Old and New Testaments attest. The same comment applies to Patrick Clarke in his more recent criticism of Velikovsky on the subject: ‘Why Pharaoh Hatshepsut is not to be equated to the Queen of Sheba’ (Journal of Creation, 24/2, August 2010, pp. 62-68).

And the same applies again to those whose new chronologies do not align the early (undivided) monarchy of Israel with the early 18th dynasty of Egypt: a downward time shift of about 500 years. Now I don’t know if Eric [Aitchison] has himself come up with any candidate for the celebrated biblical queen, but I presume that he, with his “Damien likes moving things by 500 years but my preference remains at 630 years”, cannot possibly accommodate Hatshepsut in this his singular rearrangement of time.

With Hatshepsut gone, then Thutmose III as the biblical “King Shishak of Egypt” must also go. Patrick Clarke, for instance, has rejected this equation in his ‘Was Thutmose III the biblical Shishak? – Claims of the ‘Jerusalem’ bas-relief at Karnak investigated’ (Journal of Creation, 25/1, April 2011, pp. 48-56). Two important pillars of the revision thus toppled. But, again, what is the alternative? So far, Clarke has not provided any candidate of his own. And, as for those who would prefer Ramesses II ‘the Great’ as “Shishak”, well they are running into the formidable problem as pointed out by Dale Murphie: “Critique of David Rohl’s A Test Of Time (SIS C&C Review, Oct 1997:1), with Ramesses II having the powerful king Asa of Judah (in all his strength) sandwiched right between himself and his Hittite ally, Hattusilis.

"The earth also was corrupt before God"

Corruption and Violence !

"The earth also was corrupt before God,

and the earth was filled with violence.

And God looked upon the earth,

and, behold it was corrupt;

for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

And God said unto Noah,

The end of all flesh is come before me:

for the earth is filled with violence through them:

and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth." (Genesis 5:11-13)

Biblical students often spend considerable time studying the story of the flood, but often fail to concentrate on the reason for the flood. The brevity of the story probably contributes to this since there is little said concerning the nature of the violence and corruption. Of course, all biblical students are aware of the killing of Abel by Cain and the controversy over the nature of the two different sacrifices. And this is of course the first recorded example of the violence and corruption of the first humans. We also find an example in the story of Lamech.

And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zilah,

Hear my voice: ye wives of Lamech, hearken into my speech:

for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.

If Cain shall be avenged seven fold,

truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold. (Genesis 4:23-24)

Lamech seems to be boasting that he has slain a young man for a seemingly minor offense for the last part of verse 23 can also be interpreted as "And a young lad for brusing me." The Lord had pronounced that anyone slaying Cain in vengence for his killing of Abel would be punished sevenfold. But Lamech seems to think that if anyone should try to slay him in vengence there will be a 77 fold revenge. We are not told that this proposed revenge is of the Lord, so we must assume that it would be at the hands of Lamech's sons or family, or clan, or tribe. So it would appear that we have here an example of what so often is the case in tribal or clan warfare, the susposedly "injured" party wants revenge many many times over. There have been past cases when an entire family was destroyed in revenge for a verbal insult. And this we propose is possibly only one simple example of how violent the people before the flood had become and also soon after the flood and even to today. Tubal-cain, the son of Lamech and Zildah was "a maker of every cutting instrument of bronze and iron" so it appears that the offspring of Lamech had the technology to wage very violent warfare.

There is also a post-flood example in the Cannanites. Archeological records have revealed much concerning the Cannanite societies confirming the records of the Scriptures. Infant sacrifice burials have been located in many of the Cannanite cities excavated. And the images of their gods that have been dug up have been mostly very bizarre and often depicting sexual perversions. For this reason the Lord instructed the Israelites to totally destroy them and to in no way associate with them and their religious practices.

Josephus in his "Antiquities of the Jews" says "but in the process of time they were perverted, and forsook the practices of their forefathers: and did neither pay those honours to God which were appointed them, nor had they any concern to do justice towards men. But for what degree of zeal they had formerly shown for virtue, they now showed by their actions a double degree of wickedness, whereby they made God to be their enemy."

And it repented the Lord that He had made man on the earth,

and it grieved him in his heart. (Genesis 6:6 KJV)

And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth,

He was grieved in His heart. (Genesis 6:6 NKJV)

The above verse has perplexed many students of the Scriptures. For it seems to say that the Lord was grieved because he had made a "mistake". For this is not consistent with the Lord being all knowing. If we look to the basic meaning of the Hebrew, we see that "nacham" (Strong's #5162) has a basic meaning of "to sigh".

"And the Lord sighed that He had made man on the earth,

He was grieved in His feelings"

In trying to understand the Lord we naturally want to try to attribute feelings like we have to Him since this is what we understand. We can "sigh" with displeasure over an event even though we believed it would happen that way or even knew that it would happen that way. Or "sigh" with displeasure that we will have to do something that we do not want to do even though we know that in the long run it will be best for all concerned, like going to the dentist! This we propose is the better interpretation for the situation. The Lord dearly loved the people before the flood, but the best thing for the situation was to cleanse the earth and start over with those people who had a desire to please the Lord and were displeased with violence, sin and injustice.

Justice

Whosoever sheddeth man's blood,

by man shall his blood be shed: (Genesis 9:6)

And then we have the famous or infamous:

Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

(Exodus 21:24-25)

Before anyone even enters an argument or discussion on the above, would it not be better to simply pharaphrase the passages as:

"LET THE PUNISHMENT FIT THE CRIME"

If the thief be found, let him pay double. (Exodus 22:7)

The rules that the Lord gave to man are concerning proper justice and proper repayment to the wronged person, not about 77 fold revenge as so often is the way of man, past and present.

Conclusion: The Lord grieves today when he sees man commit many violences, sins, and injustices just as He did before the flood. One wonders how close our societies of today are approaching the wickedness of before the flood that "made God to become their enemy". Possibly the closest to home example is the ganglands of the inner cities. If we see the conditions and the mentality of the ganglands spreading over the developed nations, we can possibly be assured that we are reaching the conditions prior to the flood.
